A sense of peace.

Amazing complex work from the Japanese artist Akiko Ikeuchi, born in Tokyo in 1964 she has been hanging her beautiful delicately crafted silk thread sculptures in galleries in Japan, Korea and New York for the past two decades. For me the sense of peace even just looking at the pictures is tangible.

How she manages not to tangle the threads is a mystery!

Enjoy your weekend.

An unbelievable thread installation by Mexican Artist Gabriel Dawe, photographed in Como Italy  .
The threads look like prisms or rainbows, the scale, complexity and beauty is stunning.

A wonderful concept

Joana Vascocelos

Piano Dentelle.

Joana Vasconcelos is a French born artist who now lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. She has exhibited her works around the world in a number of group shows and many solo shows. She primarily creates sculpture and installation pieces.
Many of her key works apply white crochet patterns to a variety of objects like computers, sculptures, pianos and even bridges. The works are completely covered in the crochet, with only the form and negative space to identify the object, ‘piano dentelle’ is the aforementioned crochet covered piano and gives a good impression of the detail in these works.( Text, thanks to www.designboom.com)

No one can deny that these works are beautiful but the work that really does it for me are the large colourful textile instalations. I had often seen the crochet work but had never come across the work below until recently. Its great seeing these 'domestic' skills being excepted as art and being put forward by artists as serious ways of expressing themselves and their art more and more often recently. Finally they seem to be being acepted by the art establishment!

Sorry for the long post but I just couldn't choose, they are all so inspirational. Want more www.joanavasconcelos.com

Have a great, colourful weekend.

More student work.

This work is from foundation students at the University of Cumbria, young people on a one year course heading in the right direction for future successes, they had no professional experience prior to enrolling on this exciting and stimulating adventure and I hope that you will agree the work is amazing.

At one time you couldn't get onto an arts degree without having done a foundation course, things have changed and not always for the better in my opinion. It is hard to find these courses these days but the experience and confidence that the students gain as they start out on their professional careers by spending a year studying in this way is amazing. They are given the support and experience from their tutors to explore different disciplines, find out where their interests really lie and play creatively with ideas and techniques. Life drawing, 3d design, graphics, illustration, fine art to name but a few. The results of all this, well I think the images speak for themselves, the students can move confidently onto courses that they know are the right ones for them. A big well done to all of them for such an interesting and professional show.

Thread, wood and nails!

This complex and interesting work is from and artist called Gabriel Dawe, he is from Mexico but now lives in Canada. The work consists of Guttaman thread, wood and nails, the intensity and the blending of colour is amazing, it makes it hard to believe that these installation pieces are constructed with such simple materials.

These shimmering, 3 dimensional installation pieces are huge and stretch from floor to ceiling, I must say that I found myself wondering how many miles of thread each one took!
